Poliomyelitis is a serious disease that can cause irreversible paralysis, especially in the legs. It has no treatment and vaccination is the only form of prevention. The last case in Brazil was registered in 1989. Since 1994, the country has been certified as an area free from the circulation of the polio virus, a condition maintained thanks to immunization campaigns. The inclusion of the new reinforcement was defined by the Ministry of Health, with support from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Multi-vaccination campaign The city council also started, this Monday, a multi-vaccination campaign that will run until September 1st. The focus is to update the records of children and adolescents up to 14 years old. During the period, health teams will apply doses in around 60 municipal and state schools, in addition to reinforcing service in health centers (HCs). There is no need to make an appointment to receive the vaccines. Just go to a basic unit with a photo ID and vaccination card, if available.
