Bracell and IPÊ begin monitoring the black lion tamarin in areas of the center-west of São Paulo. The initiative will contribute to expanding knowledge about the endangered species and strengthening biodiversity conservation strategies in the region João Vitor Medeiros Teixeira (IPÊ) Bracell and IPÊ – Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas announce the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at conserving the black lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysopygus), a symbolic species of São Paulo's Atlantic Forest and threatened with extinction. The first actions began in 2026, with monitoring of the species in areas under the company's influence, in Borebi. There will also be sampling in other areas, including the municipalities of Lençóis Paulista, Iaras, São Manuel, Botucatu and Pratânia, in addition to Garça and Alvinlândia, in the Marília region. The initiative will be developed in three stages over the next few years. The initial phase is dedicated to monitoring black lion tamarin populations in these areas, generating information that will support future conservation strategies. Endemic to the state of São Paulo, the black lion tamarin is an endangered species. Today, its occurrence is restricted to around 20 forest fragments, occupying less than 1% of its original distribution area. Habitat loss and fragmentation are the main challenges for the survival of the species. After the monitoring stage, the project envisages the planning and implementation of strategies aimed at managing animals between populations and ecological connectivity, followed by a phase of consolidation and evaluation of results. The proposal integrates applied research, knowledge management and communication actions in communities, expanding the positive impact of conservation in the region. Partnership with the private sector strengthens conservation actions for the species The Black Lion Tamarin Conservation Program, which gave rise to IPÊ, is a national and international reference in the recovery of the species over the last few decades. Now, with Bracell's partnership, the actions are reinforced in strategic landscapes in the center-west of São Paulo, directly contributing to the protection of local biodiversity.
