Spanish striker Ferran Torres celebrates a goal against Argentina in the World Cup final Kai Pfaffenbach/Reuters The 2026 World Cup final, this Sunday (18), broke the audience record in the United States and became the most watched football match in the country's history, with 60 million viewers, according to the "Hollywood Reporter" magazine website. The value is the sum of the audiences of the three vehicles that broadcast the game in the USA, the broadcasters Fox and Telemundo and the streaming platform Peacock. Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time gave the Europeans their second title in the competition. The previous record belonged to the American team's elimination by the Belgians in the round of 16 at the beginning of July, with a peak of almost 46 million viewers. Despite sharing the role of host with Mexico and Canada, the USA hosted most of the games at this World Cup.

The 60 million for the World Cup final is also almost double the peak audience for the American Basketball League finals, the NBA. The fifth game between Knicks and Spurs was watched by 33 million people, the highest figure for a sports final since 1998. Super Bowl 2026, the American football league final between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, reached 137.8 million viewers in the country in February.
