Adriana Calcanhotto is the guest of this July edition of the CCBB Reading Club Reproduction / Facebook Adriana Calcanhotto ? NEWS ? “... Because my heart races / When it smells like you / Inside a book / In the gray of the hours”. Not all followers of Adriana Calcanhotto identify in these verses of the song “Vambora” – one of the artist’s biggest hits – the allusion to the title of the first book of poetry by Manuel Bandeira (1886 – 1968), “A Cinza das Horas”, published in 1917. “Motivos real banais”, a song presented in the show “Olhos de Onda” (2014), was composed by Calcanhotto based on fragments of a poem by Waly. Salomão (1943 – 2003), with whom the artist is also a partner in songs such as “A factory of the poem” (1994) and “Programa” (2002), the latter also being made with the help of another poet, Antonio Cicero (1945 – 2024), with whom Calcanhotto composed “Inverno” (1994). Ultimately, Adriana Calcanhoto created a songbook full of references to poetry and literature, some more explicit, others more subtle – such as the allusion to the “eyes of ressaca” of Capitu, a character in the book “Dom Casmurro” (Machado de Assis, 1899), in the title of the song “Olhos de onda” (2014). For this reason, Adriana Calcanhotto is fully qualified to participate in the July edition of the CCBB 2026 Reading Club in the meeting entitled “Poetry and the scene” and scheduled for 5:30 pm tomorrow, July 15th, at CCBB in Rio de Janeiro. In a conversation mediated by poets Suzana Vargas (event curator) and Ramon Nunes Mello, Calcanhotto will debate the influence of literary background on musical creation. “It will be a conversation about the books that formed me, the ones I read more than once, the ones that accompany me as a reader and as an author and how this appears in the ‘Saga lusa’, when I saw how much literature saves”, says Adriana, referring to the 2008 book that marked the artist’s debut in literature and in which she narrates the unexpected events of a Portuguese tour marked by the singer’s psychotic break. It is worth remembering that, in addition to referencing poetry in her songs and becoming a writer, Adriana Calcanhotto has also contributed in recent years to propagating poetry as a curator and organizer of poetic texts, such as those collected by the artist in the “Incomplete Anthology of Brazilian Contemporary Poetry” (2016), a book published ten years ago.
