Reproduction/TV Gazeta Consumers changed shopping days The survey showed that, with the closure of stores on Sundays, consumers began to concentrate their purchases on other days of the week. In March, sales grew mainly on Mondays (15%) and Tuesdays (25.3%). In April, the movement was greater on Wednesdays (14.8%) and Thursdays (34.3%). According to Scanntech's head of Market Intelligence, Felipe Passareli, the data indicates a quick adaptation of consumers to the new routine. At the time of the change, some chains extended their opening hours on Fridays and Saturdays to meet demand that was previously recorded on Sundays. Some categories lost more sales The study also identified that some categories were more affected than others. Products such as perfumery, meat and non-alcoholic drinks performed worse than that observed in the rest of the country. For Passareli, this occurs because consumers started to look for some products in specialized establishments. "When Sunday is no longer an option, consumers migrate to butchers, pharmacies and specialized stores. By category, the biggest differences appear in olive oil, processed cold cuts and coffee", he stated. Wholesale stores in Espírito Santo Reproduction/TV Gazeta Wholesale stores had the biggest impact According to the research, wholesale stores were the store format most affected by the change. In Espírito Santo, revenue from this segment fell 5.8%, while the national decline was 0.7%. The survey also showed that smaller supermarkets felt the effects of closing on Sundays more: In stores with one to four cashiers, performance was 6.1 percentage points below that observed in the rest of the country; among establishments with five to nine cashiers, the difference was 2.1 percentage points; In stores with ten or more cashiers, the impact was 0.2 percentage points. According to Passareli, the data indicates that "the smaller the store, the greater the effect" of the measure. g1 sought out the Espírito Santo Supermarkets Association (Acaps) and the Espírito Santo Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism (Fecomércio-ES) to comment on the results of the study, but did not receive a response until the publication of this report.
