It follows the downward trend in deforestation in the Amazon observed since 2023. From January to June, deforestation alerts were registered for 1,295 km2 in the Amazon, which represents a 32% drop compared to the accumulated figure in the same period last year.

In the Cerrado, the data also shows a significant reduction. According to INPE, deforestation alerts in the biome totaled 3,142 km2 in the first six months of the year. It is a reduction of 6% compared to the 1st half of 2025 and the lowest rate since 2021.
In June alone, DETER detected 297.3 km2 deforested in the Amazon, a number 35% lower than that observed in the same month last year (457.6 km2). In the Cerrado, the drop was 5.3%, from 508.7 km2 to 481.5 km2.
As g1 explains, DETER operates with rapid alerts that identify, based on satellite images, changes compatible with the removal of vegetation, with the aim of guiding inspection actions. These data do not represent the official deforestation rate, calculated using the PRODES system, but in general they anticipate the deforestation situation in the two biomes.
"The numbers are showing that the reduction process is being cumulative, reduction upon reduction. So, we are on a positive trajectory, both in the Amazon and in the Cerrado", said the Minister of the Environment, João Paulo Capobianco, to Folha.
For the general coordinator of MapBiomas, Tasso Azevedo, the drop in deforestation is directly linked to the resumption of environmental inspection by the federal government since 2023. However, he highlights that the rates still remain high.
"The challenge now is to transform this reduction into a structural trend. Reaching 2030 with deforestation at a residual level, something below 100 thousand hectares [1,000 km2] per year in the country, would already be a huge victory and very close to the spirit of the zero deforestation goal," Azevedo told Pará Terra Boa.
