The Mato Grosso Court maintained, this Tuesday (7), the arrest of student Larissa Karolina Silva Moreira, aged 29, who was being investigated for allegedly adopting cats to kill them, in Cuiabá.

She returned to prison on Monday (6), after failing to comply with precautionary measures imposed by the courts, including the use of an electronic ankle bracelet.

The decision was signed by judge Cássio Leite de Barros Netto, from the Justice 4.0 Center of the Judge of Guarantees – Polo Cuiabá, after the arrest warrant was served by the Civil Police.

Larissa is being investigated after an animal protection Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) reported the disappearance of a cat adopted by her and her partner, William Angonese.

During the investigations, the Civil Police gathered evidence that led to the couple's indictment for the crime of ill-treatment resulting in death.

The student had been arrested on June 13, 2025, but was released by decision of judge Fernanda Mayumi Kobayashi, from the Judge of Guarantees Justice Center.

On that occasion, the magistrate granted provisional freedom upon compliance with precautionary measures, including the use of an electronic ankle bracelet.

However, a new arrest warrant was issued by the Justice 4.0 Center of the Judge of Guarantees of Cuiabá after Larissa failed to comply with the measures imposed by the Court.

According to the decision, she broke the electronic ankle bracelet on two occasions. After undergoing a custody hearing, the student's arrest was maintained.

Investigation

The investigations began on June 8, after a complaint that a couple was not complying with the verbal agreement signed at the time of adopting animals.

Under the agreement, adopters should keep former guardians informed about the health status and conditions of the animals. However, as the couple stopped giving news, the complainant contacted the Civil Police so that the whereabouts of the cats could be investigated.

Following the complaint, a team from the Specialized Environmental Police Station (Dema) went to the suspect's residence, located in the Porto neighborhood, in Cuiabá. At the property, police officers found that one of the adopted cats had been killed and that the body had been discarded. A puppy, several packages of cat food, but no feline were also found in the house. A sheet with blood stains was also seized.

According to the Civil Police, investigations identified the bodies of three dead cats, which were sent for forensic examination.

Furthermore, the team gathered information and screenshots (prints) that indicate that the person under investigation and her companion pretended to be adopters interested in the animals and subsequently subjected them to mistreatment. The evidence supported the indictment of the couple for the crimes under investigation.

The investigations also supported the indictment of the couple for the crimes under investigation.
