The City of Cuiabá, through the Municipal Health Department (SMS), released the 6th edition of the Epidemiological Bulletin of Accidents caused by Venomous Animals, prepared by the Health Surveillance Directorate,...
The average number of records in 2026 was eight cases per week, while in the same period in 2025 the average was 23.4 weekly occurrences, representing a reduction of approximately 66% in attendances.
In the month of June alone, 38 consultations were recorded by the Unified Health System (SUS), 33 involving residents of Cuiabá and five patients from other municipalities.
Accidents with scorpions continue to be the most frequent, with 25 records, equivalent to 66% of cases treated. Next come accidents classified as “other”, with nine cases, in addition to two involving spiders and two involving snakes.
The records occurred in 19 neighborhoods in the capital. The highest concentrations were observed in the Grande Morada da Serra and Despraiado neighborhoods. The Santa Laura and Jardim Presidente neighborhoods, in the southern region of Cuiabá, also had a significant number of incidents.
According to Health Surveillance, environmental factors, such as periods of greater humidity and temperature fluctuations, favor the circulation of these animals, increasing the possibility of them invading homes and urban areas.
The Municipal Health Department highlights that, despite the reduction in cases, the population must maintain preventive care, especially during the wetter months, when there is greater activity of venomous animals.
Among the main guidelines are keeping backyards, land and gardens clean, avoiding the accumulation of debris, garbage and materials that could serve as shelter for scorpions, spiders and snakes. It is also recommended to wear closed shoes in outdoor areas, install screens in drains and cracks, keep vegetation trimmed and never put your hands in holes, piles of materials, logs or places without visibility.
In the event of an accident, the advice is to seek immediate medical attention. In addition to ensuring adequate treatment, the service allows the case to be notified, contributing to epidemiological monitoring and planning of prevention actions developed by the municipality.
