Tornado destroys house in RS: 'There's nothing left'; video

Ferreira had gone to work in the afternoon. While he was in the city, he noticed that a storm was beginning to form and received messages from people reporting that a tornado had hit the region where his residence is located.

As soon as the weather conditions improved, he returned to the property to check the situation. Upon arrival, he found the building completely destroyed by the force of the winds.

"It's a war scenario, everything has been dismantled. There's nothing left," the resident reported.

Tornado hit the interior of Pedro Osório

The phenomenon recorded in Pedro Osório represents the second tornado confirmed in Rio Grande do Sul in consecutive weeks. This Thursday's occurrence was confirmed by Climatempo Meteorologia based on information from the state's Civil Defense.

At the time of publication of the report, there was no information about injuries related to the tornado. In total, eight municipalities recorded damage this Thursday.

The previous week, on July 28, another tornado had hit the northwest region of the state, passing through the municipalities of Giruá, Sete de Setembro and Senador Salgado Filho. At the time, Regional Civil Defense confirmed four people were injured.

RS is in the tornado corridor

Rio Grande do Sul is part of the so-called South American tornado corridor, considered one of the most favorable areas on the planet for the formation of these phenomena, second only to the central region of the United States.

In the region, different atmospheric conditions are frequently encountered. Among the determining factors is the meeting of hot and humid air coming from the Amazon with cold air moving in from the south of the continent.

When there are changes in wind direction and speed depending on altitude, the storm can begin to rotate. A tornado is a rotating column of air that connects the base of the cloud to the ground. Within minutes, winds can exceed 300 km/h.

According to Climatempo Meteorologia, a tornado is an ascending air current formed between the base of a supercell and the ground, with a funnel shape and rotating movement. This intense rotation can cause twists in objects and leave a pattern of destruction along the path taken by the phenomenon.

In some cases, the funnel appears only at the base of the cloud and does not reach the ground. When it touches the surface, it is classified as a tornado. The phenomenon can travel a few kilometers and cause damage along its path.
