Administrator Mirella Ramos said that everything happened after 3am, when she got up to breastfeed her three-month-old daughter. Hearing a noise in the hallway, the family's pitbull, Ragnar, ran to the scene. The reaction caught the owner's attention, as the dog usually follows her around the house.
Shortly afterwards, Mirella heard a growl and called her husband. As the hallway was dark, he went to check and found Ragnar fighting with an animal at the back door. When he tried to pull the dog by its paw, he realized that it was an adult cougar.
The man's first action was to close the door and tell Mirella to go into the room with the children. The family believes that the jaguar was already inside the residence when Ragnar smelled it and advanced.
The fight ended when the couple's 3-year-old daughter started crying and asked the dog to go back into the yard. Ragnar managed to escape and was taken to receive treatment.
Security cameras recorded the jaguar circulating around the condominium hours after the attack. According to Mirella, residents had already reported the presence of wild animals in the region, although the jaguar records were just comments.
Dog was injuredRagnar suffered serious injuries to his face and had a compromised heart vein. He had to undergo emergency surgery. The next day, the jaguar appeared again on the steps of the house.
This time, the family had all the doors closed. Mirella called the condominium security, but only one security guard on a motorcycle showed up. She also stated that she sought out the forestry service and the municipal Civil Defense, without getting help.
After the attack, neighbors made more than 20 calls. According to Mirella, the Civil Defense informed that it could only attend a larger number of requests.
The family took almost five years to build the house, designed to raise their three daughters close to nature. Now, Mirella is considering selling the property if the jaguar is not found and removed from the site.
“We are terrified and want some authority to take some action,” he said.
