Tupac Shakur's murder goes to trial in the US almost 30 years after crime

Davis is charged with murder using a firearm and also for allegedly committing the crime to promote or favor a criminal gang. Imprisoned since the end of 2023, he pleaded not guilty.

According to the prosecutor's office, Davis was not the shooter, but he commanded the action and provided the weapon used in the attack. The shots came from the Cadillac he was in, and Davis is one of the only survivors in the vehicle that night.

The case remained unsolved for decades and became one of the biggest mysteries in hip-hop history. For prosecutors, the investigation only advanced because Davis wrote about the murder in a memoir and made public statements in interviews over the years. The trial is expected to last about a month.

In April of this year, Maurice Shakur, the rapper's half-brother, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in a Los Angeles court.

According to The New York Times, the legal action is directed at Duane Keith Davis, known as Keffe D, who had already been arrested in 2023, after being accused of leading a group to kill the American artist. The family seeks compensation for unspecified damages and the liability of other possible parties involved.

According to the lawsuit, there are still questions about the total number of those responsible for the crime. Maurice states that some of those involved have already died or remain unidentified, but highlights that new information has contributed to the advancement of investigations. The legal action also seeks to hold accountable individuals who may have participated in the crime.

Duane Keith Davis has been in prison since August 2023 and is awaiting trial. In previous statements, he declared involvement in the case and alleged that Sean "Diddy" Combs had offered US$1 million to kill Tupac, which was never proven. Investigations indicate that retaliation may have motivated the crime after a confrontation involving Tupac, Suge Knight and Davis' nephew.

The trial is expected to begin in August and could be postponed until 2027. Davis' defense states that he continues to await the progress of the case and possible legal reviews related to his arrest.
