British prosecutors announced on Saturday that they requested the extradition of the brothers to face charges of rape and trafficking of women, crimes that were allegedly committed between 2010 and 2017.
With dual citizenship — North American and British —, the brothers moved to Romania in 2016. They were arrested in the country in 2022, accused of being part of a scheme to attract women with the aim of sexually exploiting them. Both deny the accusations, and the process was interrupted due to legal and procedural irregularities.
According to a source familiar with the case, interviewed by the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it was a confidential police operation, the two are expected to appear in Miami federal court early next week.
Charges filed in the UK allege the brothers abused women in an area north of London where they grew up. Defense lawyers said their clients deny all charges.
Joseph McBride, an attorney representing the Tate brothers, said in a telephone interview Saturday night that he has not yet been able to speak to his clients. He called the new UK accusations a "smear campaign" designed to undermine libel suits brought by the brothers in the United States.
"They are doing everything they can to ensure these men never have the opportunity to defend themselves in court," McBride said.
"We are confident that once a competent judge reviews the facts and the Department of Justice addresses this clear abuse of authority, Andrew and Tristan Tate will be released. The United States does not do the UK's dirty political work," he added.
Andrew Tate, 39, gained notoriety in 2016 when he participated in the British reality show Big Brother. He was expelled from the program after a video was released that apparently showed him assaulting a woman. He and his brother Tristan Tate, 38, are vocal supporters of United States President Donald Trump.
Andrew Tate has accumulated more than 10 million followers on the social network X, but has been banned from platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Instagram for violating policies related to hate speech. Among the most criticized statements are comments stating that women victims of sexual violence should take part of the responsibility for the attacks they suffered, explicit descriptions of how women could be attacked and criticisms of people seeking treatment for mental illnesses.
The Tate brothers have consistently denied all allegations of abuse and human trafficking. They claim that his statements considered violent and misogynistic were taken out of context or made in jest.
