Six members of the Bolsonaro family are expected to contest the 2026 elections

The family name in the dispute for Palácio do Planalto will be Flávio Bolsonaro. At 45 years old, the senator was chosen by the Liberal Party, the same party as his father, to run for President of the Republic.

Before arriving in the Senate, Flávio built his political career in Rio de Janeiro, where he served as a state deputy. In the presidential election, he will face current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is seeking re-election and a fourth term at the head of the country. Flávio's candidacy was made official by the PL in July.

The mother of Flávio, Carlos and Eduardo Bolsonaro will also be on the ballot. Rogéria Bolsonaro, Jair Bolsonaro's first wife, was announced by the PL as a candidate for federal deputy for Rio de Janeiro.

Rogéria has already held a seat in the Rio City Council. She was a councilor in the capital of Rio de Janeiro after being elected in 1992 and again in 1996.

In São Paulo, Renato Bolsonaro will try to win a seat as federal deputy. Younger brother of the former president, he will run for a position in the National Congress for the first time, at the age of 61.

Michelle Bolsonaro will be a candidate for the Senate for the Federal District. Affiliated with the PL, the former first lady took an active part in Jair Bolsonaro's presidential campaign in 2022 and became one of the main figures in the political group.

Evangelical, Michelle is seen by allies as a leader capable of expanding support among women and conservative voters.

Santa Catarina will have two other family members in the dispute. Carlos Bolsonaro, 43 years old, will run for the state Senate after leaving politics in Rio de Janeiro, where he served successive terms as a councilor.

Jair Renan Bolsonaro, 28 years old, will run for federal deputy. The former president's youngest son began his electoral career in Balneário Camboriú, where he won a mandate as councilor.

With Flávio, Michelle, Carlos, Rogéria, Renato and Jair Renan, the family should have candidates in four units of the Federation: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Distrito Federal and Santa Catarina.

Jair and Eduardo are out of the dispute

Jair Bolsonaro will not be able to run in October. In addition to being ineligible, the former president is under house arrest after being convicted of participating in the attempted coup d'état related to the 2022 electoral defeat.

Eduardo Bolsonaro is also prevented from contesting the elections. Living in the United States since 2025, the former deputy was sentenced by the Federal Supreme Court to four years and two months in prison for the crime of coercion during the process.

The decision considered that Eduardo acted in the United States to pressure Brazilian authorities and try to interfere in his father's trial. The conviction also resulted in the suspension of his political rights.

Parties, federations and coalitions have until August 15th to submit requests to the Electoral Court for registration of the candidates chosen at the conventions. The names will still need to be analyzed by electoral courts.

The first round will be held on October 4th. More than 158.7 million voters will be able to choose president, governors, senators and federal, state or district deputies.

Moraes asks PGR for opinion on banning visits to Bolsonaro

Typically, inmates receive scheduled visits. Moraes decided that the former president is prohibited from receiving visits for political-electoral purposes until the end of the October elections
