See when and how to observe the August eclipses in Brazil

The August sky will have two eclipses, but only one of them will be able to be widely followed by Brazilians. The first phenomenon will occur on the 12th, when the Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun. On the night of August 27th to 28th, it will be the turn of the Earth's shadow to cover a large part of the Moon.

The solar eclipse on August 12 will be total in areas of Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, Spain and a small part of Portugal. Other regions in Europe, Africa and North America will be able to observe the phenomenon in a partial way.

In Brazil, the full phase will not be visible. Observation data indicates only a very limited possibility of a partial eclipse in a small area of ??Rio Grande do Norte, between approximately 4:15 pm and 4:43 pm Brasília time. In most of the Brazilian territory, the phenomenon cannot be monitored.

Eye protection

In places where the solar eclipse is visible, direct observation requires specific protection. Ordinary sunglasses, improvised lenses, x-rays and toy accessories do not protect the eyes against solar radiation.

The only equipment indicated are glasses or viewers developed for eclipses and compatible with the international standard ISO 12312-2. You should also not look at the Sun through cameras, binoculars or telescopes without solar filters installed on the front of the devices.

Lunar eclipse will be visible throughout Brazil

The main event for Brazilian observers will take place between the night of the 27th and the early hours of the 28th of August. The partial lunar eclipse can be seen in all regions of the country, as long as weather conditions permit.

The phenomenon happens when the Earth is positioned between the Sun and the Moon, projecting its shadow onto the satellite. This time, more than 90% of the lunar disk will be covered during the maximum moment, which will make the eclipse appear almost total.

In Brasília time, the penumbral phase will begin at 10:23 pm on the 27th. The most noticeable part of the eclipse will begin after midnight, and the maximum point will occur around 1:12 am on the 28th. The phenomenon will end at 4:01 am. The times change depending on the time zone of each region.

Unlike the solar eclipse, the lunar eclipse can be observed with the naked eye, without glasses or special filters. Binoculars and telescopes are not mandatory, but they can help you see details of the Moon's surface.

To monitor the phenomenon, the recommendation is to look for a place with a clear horizon, little artificial lighting and good visibility of the sky. The presence of clouds will be the main factor capable of hindering observation.
