CURITIBA, PR (FOLHAPRESS) - The formation of an extratropical cyclone on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul should drive a cold front and bring changes in weather conditions to the southern region of the country starting this Thursday (6).

The CMDEC (Civil Defense Monitoring Center in Rio Grande do Sul) warned this Wednesday (5) of the possibility of severe storms and the chance of a tornado in the state from the early hours of Thursday.

According to the agency, there is a risk of isolated storms with hail in areas such as the north, center and west, in the early hours and Thursday morning. On Thursday afternoon and evening, there is the possibility of severe storms with gusts of wind, which can exceed 100 km/h, hail and occasionally intense rain in most regions of the state, still being the case. There is also a chance of a tornado.

A similar condition is expected for Friday (7).

According to CMDEC, practically the entire state should be on alert. "An intense cold front will cross Rio Grande do Sul this Thursday and, with that, there is a risk of storms, which could be severe in some points. This cold front will start at the border of Uruguay and will advance towards all regions of Rio Grande do Sul, mainly throughout the afternoon and evening of Thursday", says CMDEC meteorologist Bruno Ribeiro.

"These storms can have intense gusts of wind and hail, which can be large in some spots," he continues.

In São Paulo, Civil Defense set up a crisis office to monitor the effects of the phenomenon in the state. The gusts should start this Thursday, with an orange alert forecast. Winds are expected to be up to 60 km/h.

On Friday and Saturday, a red alert is expected for cities in São Paulo with gusts that can reach 100 km/h, mainly on the coast, eastern part of the state and mountain regions.

The forecast for the South comes after a July marked by successive storms in Rio Grande do Sul, especially in the second half of the month. Initially, strong winds tore apart houses and toppled trees and power poles. After a brief respite, the rain began to fall again, and heavily, flooding streets and driving people out of their homes.

The cold front that arrives this week in the southern region should also affect Paraná and Santa Catarina.

According to Ciram (Environmental Resources and Hydrometeorology Information Center), in Santa Catarina, the forecast is for storms in the state, with gusts of wind, electrical discharges and possible hail, between late Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

Also according to Ciram, the greatest influence of the extratropical cyclone will be in coastal areas between Rio Grande do Sul and part of the coast of Argentina, with strong southerly winds and intense sea agitation.

"The weather forecast fields indicate the intensification of the cyclone, with atmospheric pressure characteristics compatible with that of a bomb cyclone, on Friday night (7), when it is very far from the southern coast of Brazil, close to the coast of Argentina", adds the agency.

Cedec (State Civil Defense Coordination), in Paraná, also warns of the risk of storms with strong winds starting this Thursday. According to Simepar (Paraná's Environmental Technology and Monitoring System), the most affected regions will be the West, Center-South and Southwest.

On Friday, wind gusts in much of the state could exceed 70 km/h.

Also according to Simepar, the forecast for the next few days is persistent rain in much of Paraná.

"Until next Monday (10), there is a possibility of rain in all areas of Paraná, with more intensity in the southern half of Paraná, where rainfall levels may exceed 100 millimeters, which is already close to the climatological average for the month in a few days", communicates the agency.
