The victim was identified as 24-year-old Safwan Awae. He received treatment at the scene and was taken to a hospital in serious condition, but he did not survive his injuries.
People watching the match recorded the moment of the incident. The images show a strong flash in the sky seconds before the electrical discharge hit the field, causing panic among players, members of the technical committees and fans.
The game was immediately interrupted and then cancelled.
Born in 2002, Safwan Awae had recently been signed by FC Yala, a club that competes in the third division of football in Thailand. In a note published on social media, the team mourned the athlete's death and expressed solidarity with his family.
