"I discovered toxoplasmosis and I hadn't even announced the pregnancy. I think I must have been about ten weeks along. When the first positive test came out, at the end of the day, I cried and was desperate", she reported.
As there was the possibility of a false positive result and an international trip scheduled, Isabella contacted the obstetrician and re-ran the tests in other laboratories. "I called my obstetrician and went to two other laboratories. I ran out in despair," said the 2021 MasterChef Brasil (Band) champion.
The concern has an explanation. Without treatment, toxoplasmosis can be transmitted to the fetus and cause complications, such as eye damage, neurological changes and even miscarriage. According to Isabella, early diagnosis prevented the infection from reaching the baby.
"I caught it early and monitored the antibodies and the infection. The kicker is that I was able to detect it in the first three days. I was very lucky," said the influencer, who is in the eighth month of pregnancy with Tom, her third child with Rodrigo Calazans, 40. The couple are also parents to 3-year-old twins Mel and Bento.
After sharing the experience, Isabella received messages of support, but also faced criticism on social media.
In one of the videos, she stated that she does not know how the infection occurred and raised hypotheses, including a meal at her father's house, former Olympic swimmer Fernando Scherer, known as Xuxa, who raises cats.
She highlighted, however, that the pediatrician explained that contamination can also occur through sandboxes frequented by children. "I don't know where I got infected. During my pregnancy, I was much more careful with salads and raw meats. That must have been it," she said.
After the repercussion, Isabella accused a media outlet of distorting her speech and reinforced that she did not hold cats responsible for the contagion. "There were a thousand comments thanking you for explaining and not blaming the cats. Then a vehicle distorted everything I said and you replicated this without watching the real testimony," he wrote.
After birth, Tom will undergo tests to rule out vertical transmission of the infection. If contamination is confirmed, treatment involves the use of antibiotics during the first year of life.
