Gus, one of the largest T-Rex skeletons known, was sold by Sotheby's on July 14th, in New York, in the United States, breaking a record price for a dinosaur fossil put up for auction: it cost 50.1 million dollars (about 255 million reais).

The dinosaur in question would have lived around 67 million years ago, Sotheby's points out.

On Gus' presentation page, the auctioneer notes that this is one of the largest and "most complete" T-Rex skeletons ever discovered, measuring around 11.6 meters long and reaching 3.8 meters in height. It is made up of 183 bones.

The Guinness World Records page reveals that Gus became the first dinosaur in history to surpass the 50 million dollar 'mark' at auction. The buyer remains anonymous.

The skeleton was found on a ranch in the US state of South Dakota in 2021. Excavations continued in 2022 and 2023.

Gus was named after Gary 'Gus' Licking, the owner of the land on which the skeleton was discovered - and who has since died.
