First half of 2026 is the second deadliest for motorcyclists in São Paulo
SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - A motorcyclist was traveling on the morning of January 18th on the M'Boi Mirim road, in Jardim Ângela, south of São Paulo, when he was hit by a driver who went the wrong way in an attempt to...
The accident involving the 52-year-old driver was one of 238 cases of motorcyclists killed in the capital of São Paulo in the first six months of this year.
According to data from Infosiga (state system that measures traffic fatality), released this Wednesday (15), the first half of 2026 was the second most lethal in accidents involving motorcycles in the municipality since the beginning of the historical series in 2015 - second only to 2024, with 239 deaths, just one more.
Comparing the semesters, the number of motorcyclists killed increased by 8.2% in the municipality - in the first six months of 2025 there were 220 cases. In the compared period, the fleet increased by 4.5% - from 1.32 million to 1.38 million, according to Senatran (National Traffic Secretariat).
Last month alone, 50 people who were on motorcycles died in the capital of São Paulo. It was the month with the highest number of this type of traffic victim of the year.
Despite the numbers, the Ricardo Nunes (MDB) administration states that expanding road safety is ongoing work in the city.
In a note, the city hall says that the pioneering blue lane project (marking on the asphalt for exclusive motorcycle traffic) has covered 233.3 km since 2022, benefiting around 500,000 motorcyclists daily.
"In addition, the city has more than a thousand waiting areas [boxes at traffic lights] for motorcycles", he states.
Overall, deaths in all traffic accidents remained stable. There were 489 deaths this semester compared to 483 in the first six months of 2025, an increase of 1.2%.
There was a 22% drop only in victims who were in cars - there were 38 people.
Infosiga data shows that there was a 6% drop in the number of people killed in traffic in the state of São Paulo in the first half of the year (2,896 records).
In the case of motorcycles, there were 1,327 deaths in 2026, around 1.3% less than last year.
“The city is out of step with other municipalities in São Paulo,” says Mariana Novaski, Data and Surveillance coordinator at the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety.
She points to an upward trend in motorcyclist death statistics and cites the lack of motorcycle speed enforcement as one of the city's main problems. “There is a lack of care,” he says.
As Folha de S. Paulo showed, a survey carried out among motorcyclists hospitalized at the Hospital das Clínicas, in São Paulo, showed that 95% of the accidents that led to their hospitalization occurred on roads that did not have electronic speed monitoring.
According to the work, in almost 70% of the reported cases there were no speed limit signs in the place where the accident occurred.
The data is part of a study carried out by Instituto Cordial in partnership with Abramet (Brazilian Association of Traffic Medicine).
"Speed ??is an extremely important factor [in accidents], but in the case of motorcycles it is even more dramatic, because the motorcyclist is completely unprotected", he states.
In the capital of São Paulo, there was a slight increase in the number of victims of pedestrian accidents - from 187 to 190. The first half of 2026, however, is the fourth deadliest in the historical series.
The City of São Paulo says that around 10,000 new pedestrian crossing lanes have been implemented by the current municipal management since 2021 and the speed reduction from 50 km/h to 40 km/h on 24 roads.
Ana Carolina Nunes, relationship director at the organization Cidadeapé - Association for Mobility on Foot in São Paulo, states that changes in road design in known areas, such as places close to public transport hubs, could reduce the number of pedestrian accidents. "The [Infosiga] heat map shows where there are concentrations [of pedestrian accidents]", she says.
