A 31-year-old father was arrested after impersonating his 11-year-old daughter on TikTok, luring a man accused of raping the girl and shooting him twice. The case took place in Grove City, in the state of Ohio, in the United States.

Malik Chandler allegedly set up the meeting after the child's mother found a video on her daughter's cell phone that indicated sexual abuse. According to prosecutors, the images were recorded inside the family's residence.

How did the father attract the suspect via TikTok?

The day after discovering the video, Chandler allegedly accessed his daughter's TikTok account and pretended to be the child to talk to 20-year-old Diego Montoya Gonzalez. During the exchange of messages, he convinced the young man to return to the property.

In testimony, the father stated that he intended to attack Gonzalez, keep him there and call the police. He stated, however, that he decided to shoot when he believed that the suspect was trying to reach a gun he was carrying in his pocket.

When officers arrived, they found Gonzalez sitting in a chair and suffering from two gunshot wounds. He was taken to Grant Medical Center in Columbus and survived.

Father was charged with assault after shooting

Malik Chandler was arrested and charged with felonious assault. The court set bail at US$100,000 so that he can respond to the case in freedom.

The case caused repercussions in the community. Residents said they understood the father's revolt, although they stressed that the violent reaction could not be considered legally justifiable.

What charges are against Diego Montoya Gonzalez?

Gonzalez was arrested on July 22 after fleeing from officers trying to locate him. A grand jury later brought eight formal charges against him: two for rape, five for disseminating sexual material involving minors and one for obstructing police activities. He pleaded not guilty during the hearing.

Investigators also allegedly found several videos of child sexual abuse on the young man's cell phone, including a recording involving a baby or young child.

The court set a total bond of US$70,000 for Gonzalez. If released, he will not be able to maintain contact with the girl or her family and will have internet access limited to professional activities.

Investigations continue in Ohio

Authorities continue to investigate both the allegations of sexual violence against Gonzalez and the circumstances under which Chandler fired the shots.

The two processes are processed separately. The accusations against the young man do not nullify the investigation into the conduct of his father, who will continue to be responsible for the armed attack.
