SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - Chief Raoni Metuktire was discharged from Unifesp's São Paulo Hospital this Wednesday morning (15), after almost a month of hospitalization to treat an intestinal obstruction and complications arising from the clinical condition.

According to a bulletin released by the unit, Raoni was admitted to the unit on June 19 with high intestinal obstruction and aspiration pneumonia. The following day, he underwent clearance surgery to maintain intestinal transit. During his hospitalization, he also underwent two procedures to contain digestive bleeding.

According to the hospital, the Kayapó leader presented a favorable clinical evolution and was discharged in stable condition. The unit did not provide details about the treatment that will be maintained during recovery.

Before arriving in São Paulo, Raoni was admitted to Hospital e Maternidade Dois Pinheiros, in Sinop (MT). He had been transferred from the Peixoto de Azevedo region after experiencing episodes of vomiting, persistent cough and abdominal pain. The transfer to the capital of São Paulo was defined to continue specialized treatment and surgical monitoring, on an aircraft made available by the Government of Mato Grosso.

During his stay at Unifesp, the chief was taken to the ICU after an episode of digestive bleeding at the end of June. Days later, he returned to the infirmary, but developed a second bleed on July 10, in addition to a slight worsening of kidney function and a cough with secretions.

In the most recent bulletins, the hospital reported progressive improvement in the condition, with recovery of kidney function, oral feeding and clinical stability.

Internationally recognized for his defense of the Amazon and indigenous peoples, Raoni became one of the country's main indigenous leaders and a reference in the fight to protect traditional territories and the forest.

Born in the Kapot village, in Mato Grosso, the indigenous leader stated that he only had contact with a non-indigenous man when he was around 20 years old. In 1989, after meeting British musician Sting in the Amazon, he began a series of international trips and established himself as one of the best-known voices in defense of the Amazon rainforest.

As Raoni was not registered at birth, the exact date of his birth is unknown. Based on his reports, anthropologist Fernando Niemeyer estimates that the chief dates back to 1937, but there is no official confirmation of this.
