Anya Taylor-Joy says method acting isn't viable for women

"If you notice, women don't do method acting because we have things to take care of, so we can't just completely lose our minds," he said, in an interview with the Complex News portal.

The technique, created by Russian theater actor Konstantin Stanislavski, involves the actor getting closer to his character, using his own memory and experience to seek real emotions that imitate the fictional feeling.

When he played Joker, Jared Leto refused to "break character" even when he was not on camera and, as a result, engaged in abusive practices towards his co-stars, such as sending them a dead pig and used condoms.

One of the most famous actors to use the tactic is Daniel Day-Lewis, who defended the method by stating that anyone who criticizes it has no knowledge of the technique. "It's just a way of freeing yourself so that when you're working with your colleagues on camera, you have spontaneity and freedom to react in whatever way comes up at that moment," he said, during the 2025 London Film Festival.

Anya Taylor-Joy, however, says she doesn't imagine living as a character all the time. "You're working with hundreds of other people and it's your responsibility to be friendly to them and help them do the best job possible," he explained. "If you're invested in being an asshole, then it won't be much fun."

The actress went further and said that, for her, acting is a controlled form of psychosis, as the professional spends 16 hours a day pretending to be someone else, internalizing the character's thoughts and mannerisms. "It's like having a sister or a roommate in my head for a while."
