The situation led Spain to activate the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism. Greece and Italy made four planes available in total to help fight the fires.
The European Union has a rescEU program fleet made up of 22 planes and five helicopters, which can be mobilized at the request of Member States. In addition, it maintains a reserve of 777 firefighters previously positioned in areas considered to be at greatest risk.
The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, said this Friday that the country is facing "a dramatic situation" in several provinces due to forest fires, which led to the declaration of a state of emergency in the regions of Madrid and Ávila.

On Thursday night, Spain's Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, declared a national state of emergency in the provinces of Madrid and Ávila.
"It's a very difficult day, with an extremely adverse situation," said the minister, explaining that the priority at this time is to prevent the fires in the Madrid region and Ávila from joining together.
