According to an investigation by the executive branch of the European Union (EU), the platform allows minors to configure their accounts as public, making their content visible to any user, including people without an account on TikTok. Additionally, posts by 16 and 17 year olds can be recommended to other users through the \"For You\" feed. For the Commission, this exposure can facilitate unwanted contacts, cyberbullying and predatory behavior.
The Commission also pointed out that, even when minors choose private accounts, their profiles remain easily findable through the lists of followers and followers of other users, while their profile photos remain accessible to the public.
In the preliminary assessment, TikTok should configure, by default, minors' public accounts so that their content is visible only to users approved by the teenager himself and stop recommending minors' content in the "For You" feed. The investigation has not yet been completed, and TikTok will be able to present its defense before a final decision is made.
If the conclusion is confirmed, the Commission may declare non-compliance with the DSA and impose a fine of up to 6% of the company's global annual revenue.
