Baby Noah's parents report emotion at finding their son alive after five hours of mourning The case of baby Noah, who was declared dead after suffering two cardiopulmonary arrests and ended up being found alive by employees at a funeral home hours later, still intrigues doctors. In an interview with Fantástico, the medical director of Santa Casa where Noah was hospitalized, Marco Aurélio Mestrinel, stated that, from a medical point of view, the team followed all protocols before declaring the baby's death. "This child was in rehabilitation for more than 40 minutes. All the devices showed the child's death. And, after that, the clinical confirmation is still made", he said. Asked how he explains the case, the doctor was direct. "We didn't find any justification for what could have happened." According to Mestrinel, the hospital carried out an administrative investigation and the case is also being analyzed by the institution's ethics committee. "It has already been investigated administratively, now it is being investigated by the ethics committee. So far, we have no corrections to be made," he stated. To try to understand the episode, Fantástico also heard from experts who were not directly involved in Noah's care. The medical manager at Sabará Children's Hospital, Nelson Rorigoshi, explained that similar cases are extremely rare and that, when they occur, they usually involve adults or the elderly. "This is very rare around the world. There was a review that was carried out in 2020. They managed to catch 65 cases. The vast majority are adults and elderly people. Children are already out of the curve," he said. According to the expert, one of the hypotheses discussed in the medical literature is the so-called Lazarus syndrome, the name given to the spontaneous return of circulation after the interruption of resuscitation attempts. "They talk about Lazarus syndrome, remembering biblical episodes in which Jesus made Lazarus resurrect. It is an attempt at an explanation based on physiological data, so as not to accept the theory that it is something miraculous", he explained. Despite this, Rorigoshi highlights that Noah's case deviates from the pattern observed in these episodes. "Normally it takes minutes. More or less 70% of the people who return, return within five minutes. And the rest return within ten minutes. Look how exceptional this child's case is. We are talking about hours", he stated. Two days after being found breathing in the Santa Casa morgue, Noah was transferred to the Hospital das Clínicas de Bauru, which specializes in genetic diseases and congenital anomalies. The baby remains hospitalized, intubated and is not expected to be discharged. According to his parents, he is progressing clinically and continues to be monitored by the medical team.
