'We all ended up under the boat': what the testimonies of survivors of the accident at Iguaçu Falls say "We all ended up under the boat." The phrase summarizes the moments of despair experienced by Dutch tourists who survived the accident with a boat at the Iguaçu Falls, in Paraná, which ended with the death of Mark Lessink, aged 25. The statements given to the Civil Police and obtained exclusively by Fantástico reveal what happened in the seconds following the overturning of the boat. Survivors claim that everything happened quickly, with no time to react, and report difficulties staying on the surface of the water. According to the report, the family boarded after receiving the life jackets, but says they did not receive instructions on how to use them correctly or on the procedures in case the vessel capsizes. "When we arrived at the boat, we were given life jackets that we needed to fasten at waist level. There was no explanation about how to use the vest or what to do if the boat capsized," said Mak's brother-in-law in his statement. Shortly after starting the return trip along the Iguaçu River, a wave hit the side of the vessel. "As we sailed towards the middle of the river, a big wave hit the boat from the left. It was a huge wave. The boat capsized in a few seconds. After that, we all ended up under the boat. First we struggled to get out of there," said Mark's father-in-law. After managing to escape the capsized vessel, the passengers say they faced another difficulty: staying on the surface. According to the testimony, the vests used did not prevent them from sinking. "There was a ribbon that fastened at the waist, but as it didn't fasten underneath, between the legs, the vest always rode up." According to the Paraná civil police chief, the survivors had difficulty floating because the river currents were pulling them down. "They had extreme difficulty staying on top of the water. The chains led them downwards and the vest wasn't enough to keep them on top of the water." The boyfriend of one of the daughters said that, after escaping from the boat, he tried to locate the other passengers. "Mark and I didn't get trapped under the overturned boat and immediately looked for the others. I managed to rescue Mark's fiancée and my mother-in-law. After that, I didn't see Mark again." According to the family, despite the situation, Mark still managed to help another person before disappearing. According to the testimony, he saved his sister-in-law and then shouted for them to help his fiancée. That would have been the last time he was seen alive. Survivors also stated that they did not receive any guidance on what to do if they fell into the water. "There is no guidance if something happens. We weren't given guidance before. If you fall into the water, if something happens, lie on your back or something like that. Nothing like that", says housewife, Karen Charlotte. The Navy reported that the vessel, crew and life jackets were in compliance with current regulations. The Civil Police stated that, so far, they have not found evidence of error by the pilots, but are investigating whether there was a deficiency in the safety protocols adopted by the company responsible for the tour. The Scientific Police report concluded that Mark Lessink died from drowning. The investigations are now seeking to determine whether the operation managers were responsible for the accident.
