However, the practice is illegal and, according to the police, can be classified as the crime of theft. Defined by the Penal Code as "stealing, for oneself or for another, someone else's movable property", theft is punishable by one to four years in prison, plus a fine. If the theft is qualified - involving the destruction of items or the involvement of two or more people, for example - the penalty can reach up to eight years in prison. Criminal responsibilities are also extended to anyone who "acquires, receives, transports, carries or hides, for their own benefit or that of others, something they know to be the proceeds of crime". The act is categorized as a crime of reception, the sentence of which, if convicted, can reach up to four years in prison, plus a fine. "The looting of cargo, in addition to being harmful to companies and self-employed workers, creates a risk of accidents for the looters themselves, who can be run over, or someone who tries to divert it there and can cause another accident [...] there is also a lot of theft due to the obstacle breaking, which is when the truck breaks down and they get together and break into the container or trunk to commit the crime", explains João Ricardo Barioni, head of policing at the Federal Highway Police in Londrina. 'Cultural conditioning' See images of looting of truck loads that overturned in accidents on Brazilian roads In 2023, a Fantástico report rescued several lootings recorded in Brazil and brought the testimony of those involved in the incidents. Watch above. At the time, delegate José Maranduba assessed that there is a kind of cultural conditioning for the act. "There is a cultural conditioning for that, as if it were a natural thing, of 'let's just go and get it'. There is a certain view that once those goods have fallen, they no longer have owners, and you can go there and get them - and that is not true", said the delegate. Most watched videos from g1 Paraná:
