As a result, CIEVS-JP also ruled out the need to use antibiotics for people who had close contact with the student, such as family members. CIEVS-JP also highlighted that the student was not at school while showing symptoms of meningitis, which did not result in exposure of colleagues or employees in the school environment. As a result, surveillance did not indicate the suspension of classes and school activities, but advised that family members and the school community should be aware of symptoms such as: fever; severe headache; stiff neck; nausea and vomiting; changes in general condition. Anyone who presents these symptoms should seek medical care. The CIEVS-JP also reported that the bacteria that cause meningitis do not survive outside the human body, are not transmitted by surfaces or objects and require direct contact with respiratory secretions for transmission to occur.
