Sema and other institutions will implement an environmental control plan Six municipalities in Amapá — Oiapoque, Calçoene, Amapá, Ferreira Gomes, Mazagão and Porto Grande — are already being monitored by the State Secretariat for the Environment (Sema) due to the drought. In 2026, these regions were classified as priority based on environmental data. The drought usually starts in August. This year, according to Civil Defense, it should be more intense, with a risk of severe droughts and forest fires in several regions. Download the g1 app to see AP news in real time and for free. The alert also considers the forecast from the World Meteorological Organization, which points to extreme effects of El Niño until August. The phenomenon happens when the Pacific warms and changes the climate in various parts of the world. ?According to the head of the World Meteorological Organization, the 2026 El Niño will be “moderate, possibly strong”. Marcos Almeida, director of Sema, highlighted Mazagão as one of the areas of greatest attention in monitoring. "We will monitor month by month and treat this data statistically for decision making. Especially Mazagão, which in the past was one of the municipalities with the most deforestation and, consequently, the most hot spots", he said. The plan's data guides the departments on how to act in each region and define priorities. The plan brings together goals and strategies to prevent, monitor and reduce deforestation, burning and fires, in addition to strengthening environmental governance and sustainable development in the State. "This plan was created by several State departments, not just Sema. With it we have already had positive results, such as the reduction in deforestation and hot spots, in addition to the drop in forest fires. In the last three years, we managed to reduce hot spots by 62% and reduce the deforestation rate. Amapá today has the lowest rate in the country, year after year", highlighted Marcos. One of the goals is to reduce deforestation from 15 km² to 12 km² by 2030.
