According to the Maranhão Military Police (PM-MA), the arrest was made by a military police officer who caught the crime in progress. According to the PM, the robbery took place around 11:40 pm, in a bus on the Bom Jardim line. He then found that the driver was being threatened by two people: a man and a woman. According to police, the man had a knife, used to intimidate the victim. The police officer then ordered the driver to stop the bus. Because of the threats, the driver was unable to stop immediately. After a new verbal order, the collective was stopped.

The Military Police reported that, given the incident and the need to stop the crime and protect the driver and passengers, the officer identified himself as a member of the corporation and ordered the suspects to remain at the scene. However, the two disobeyed the order and tried to escape. The suspects were caught and restrained by the police officer, who also prevented them from being attacked by members of the public. Then, support was requested from a team from the 20th Military Police Battalion (20th BPM), which assisted in the searches. A cell phone was found that had been stolen from a passenger and discarded by the suspect during the escape, the knife used in the crime and around R$95, an amount corresponding to the collective's income. Still according to the PM, the driver and passengers recognized the couple as responsible for the robbery. The corporation also reported that the two suspects spontaneously admitted to committing the crime. Those involved and all the material seized were sent to Cohatrac Central Duty. During the registration of the case, it was discovered that there was an outstanding arrest warrant against the bus driver. The information was recorded and presented to the police authority for appropriate action.
