Fluid technology monitors the network and helps identify leaks and water losses. Disclosure Petrópolis, in the Serrana region of Rio, is among the Brazilian municipalities with the best performance in controlling water losses, according to the 2026 Water Loss Study, published by Instituto Trata Brasil in partnership with GO Associados. The survey, which uses data from the National Basic Sanitation Information System (Sinisa) for 2024, points out that the city recorded a rate of 22.28% of distribution losses, ranking 16th among the 100 most populous municipalities in Brazil. The result is below the 25% target established by Ordinance No. 788/2024, of the Ministry of Cities, to be achieved by 2033. ? Follow the g1 Região Serrana channel on WhatsApp.

According to the study, the national average of distribution losses is 39.53%. The Instituto Trata Brasil estimates that the country wastes around 4.4 billion cubic meters of treated water per year, a volume that could supply approximately 77 million people for 12 months. For the mayor of Petrópolis, Hingo Hammes, the result reinforces the importance of measures aimed at preserving water resources. "In a scenario where we see that climate change causes a series of impacts, including water insecurity, Petrópolis stands out in the country for its efforts to avoid the loss of water in distribution processes. This is absolutely fundamental from both an environmental and social point of view", he stated. Standard of excellence In addition to its position in the national ranking, Petrópolis is part of a group of just 12 Brazilian municipalities that simultaneously achieved the criteria considered excellent by the Instituto Trata Brasil and the Ministry of Cities. The parameters take into account distribution losses equal to or less than 25% and losses per connection of up to 216 liters per connection per day. The city recorded 22.28% distribution losses, according to the survey. For the director of Águas do Imperador, Marcio Salles, the result is a consequence of continuous investments in technology, monitoring and improvements in the infrastructure of the supply system. "Reducing losses is not just a technical indicator: it is ensuring that treated water reaches people, with quality and regularity. Petrópolis' performance shows that continuous investment in technology, monitoring and infrastructure renewal brings concrete results for the city", he highlighted. According to the concessionaire, among the actions carried out are monitoring the distribution network, identifying non-visible leaks, implementing Measurement and Control Districts (DMCs), replacing water meters and networks, controlling pressure and using technologies to speed up the identification of problems. The 2026 Water Loss Study analyzed supply indicators across the country, including the five Brazilian regions, the 27 states and the 100 most populous municipalities. The survey highlights reducing losses as one of the main strategies for expanding water security and improving the efficiency of supply services.
