Hole opens on Avenida Independência near crater, in Pará A crater opened on Tuesday afternoon (14) on Avenida Independência, in Ananindeua, in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, and has caused disruption, traffic delays and put drivers at risk. The asphalt gave way exactly at the intersection with Rua Quinta das Carmitas, a strategic road that gives access to Parque Vila Maguari and serves as an escape route to Avenida Cláudio Sanders. In a note, the Estrado Traffic Department (Detran-PA) reported that an inspection team was sent to the location to isolate the area and guide vehicle traffic. The new collapse point is just meters from where another giant crater formed last week. The ground gave way in such a way that the wall of a neighboring property was suspended in the air. Although the first hole was recently filled by the State Government, the asphalt gave way again shortly after, raising the alert of residents and drivers about the instability of the soil in the region. Due to the location of the hole, right on the turning curve between Quinta das Carmitas and Independência, drivers lost the safe space to make the turn. The asphalt is compromised and has a large hollow area beneath the surface layer, creating an imminent risk of further collapses. To prevent the wheels from falling into the crater, passenger vehicles, motorcycles and even buses and heavy trucks are being forced to enter the opposite lane, traveling in the opposite direction to access the avenue. Truck driver Manoel de Souza had to get out of the vehicle to assess the terrain before attempting the turn. With the help of other drivers, who stopped traffic on Avenida Independência so he could maneuver, he managed to pass after reversing a series of gears. "It's a shame what we're going through. To pass with a big truck here, you can't make the turn at once. You have to open up the maneuver a lot, going back and forth in reverse gear to get through", he said. During the maneuvers, interstate buses and minibuses full of passengers also had to make risky detours, sharing space to the millimeter with the flow of vehicles coming in the opposite direction. Avenida Independência is one of the most important roads in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, connecting the capital of Pará to the BR-316 highway. As the road has few alternative routes nearby, drivers leaving the surrounding condominiums and residential buildings have no other option than to face the damaged section.
