The collision occurred in the section that connects the municipalities of Araguatins, in the extreme north of Tocantins, and Palestine do Pará, in the southeast of Pará. Diversion and toll collection The ferry crossing service on this stretch of the Araguaia River was activated in May this year as an alternative to reestablish the flow of vehicles on BR-230, the Transamazônica Highway. The emergency measure was necessary after the bridge over the river was completely closed due to serious problems with the safety of its physical structure.
