The restriction is on approaching, feeding, contacting or any interaction with the dolphins at Mirante do Boto, close to the Municipal Market, one of the most sought after places in the city by residents and tourists. ? Mirante do Boto is one of Mocajuba's tourist attractions. There, visitors and residents had contact with and fed the dolphins that live in the Tocantins River. However, this interaction can cause disturbance to animals and contribute to changes in their natural behavior. ? UFPA project identifies baby dolphins in the Tocantins River in Mocajuba The ban on contact with dolphins was announced by City Hall on Tuesday (14), but it existed since February 2025 by municipal decree, following a recommendation from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (Icmbio) and the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama). "The measure aims to protect wildlife and ensure the well-being of these animals, avoiding changes in their natural behavior and reducing risks for both dolphins and visitors", informed the city hall. Questioned by g1, the city hall reported that it had already announced the measure, but that it is being reinforced due to the high Amazon summer season, when more tourists seek out the region, and also because episodes of interactions are still occurring, even though it is prohibited. Also according to the city hall, the main staircase at the Boto viewpoint is closed due to the measure, warnings on posters have been posted and there is supervision to prevent the interaction of people and porpoises and also the approach of tourists by people selling pieces of fish and offering to get close to the animals. The city hall asked for the population's collaboration to preserve the municipality's natural heritage.
