Maranhão says his son died in the war in Ukraine and wants his body recovered. The mother of Mateus Sandyel da Costa Campos, 24, from Maranhão, stated on social media, this Sunday (2), that her son died during combat in the war between Ukraine and Russia. Born in Açailândia, in the Tocantina region of Maranhão, the young man reportedly died on Friday (31). According to Diana Silva, the information was passed on to the family by Brazilians who fought alongside Mateus (see the mother's report in the video above). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had not confirmed the young man's death until the publication of this report. “I only found out because a colleague had the compassion to tell me,” said Diana during a broadcast on social media. Diana reported that her son's body would be in a combat area considered high risk and under the control of enemy forces. Due to security conditions, the military would not have been able to remove the body from the scene. The mother asks that the young man be rescued and that his death be officially confirmed, with the issuance of a death certificate. She also seeks information on the procedures necessary for the body to be transferred to Brazil, if possible. To g1, she said that her son went with the promise of receiving a recruitment bonus and a good salary, for a period of six months, but when he got there, the reality was different. Mateus would have received around four months of training and was still on probation when he was sent to a combat area. "I didn't imagine that, while he was still in the trial period, they would already put him on the front line. How do they put a new boy on the front line? How do they do that with someone who has only had four months of training?", declared Diana. Diana stated that there were around two months left until her son's contract ended. The family believed that he would return to Brazil after this period. "I was waiting for my son for so long. There were only two months left for him to finish his contract", he said. According to his mother, Mateus avoided sharing details about the risks faced in the war. In conversations with his family, the young man talked mainly about his routine and plans for when he returned to Brazil. "My son spared me a lot of bad news. When he spoke to me, it was just about our lives and our daily lives. I had no idea of ??reality," he said. Before being sent to the front line, Mateus had his phone taken away and was left without communication with his family, according to Diana. The lack of news caused the mother to live in constant worry. "As long as I was in communication with him, everything was fine for me. From the moment I lost communication, I started to live in tension all the time", he reported. The mother stated that the body was in a forested region, under the control of enemy forces and hit by bombings, which made the rescue work difficult. Diana said that, in the same period, her WhatsApp account was blocked without explanation. As her number had been left by Mateus as a family contact, the mother said she began to suspect that something might have happened. "When they took down my WhatsApp, I felt something bad in my heart. I thought it had something to do with what was happening," he said. Friends published photos On Saturday, the day after the reported death, Diana saw photographs of Mateus published by one of the young man's friends on social media. According to her, the posts seemed to be a farewell. The mother asked the boy if the images were recent, but received no response. "When I saw the stories of a friend of his, I saw several photos of my son and I became suspicious. This friend didn't say anything. He was saying goodbye to my son through the photos", he reported. According to Diana, other Brazilians who were at the scene already knew about the death, but did not have the courage to communicate it to the family. Family received the news On Sunday morning (2), one of Mateus' colleagues managed to contact the young man's sister and informed her about the death. “I only found out because a colleague had the compassion to tell me,” said Diana. As the mother's WhatsApp account was blocked, the person called her sister's phone, which had also been left as a family contact. "When the person asked if she was Vitória and started talking, I already knew. I said: 'It happened, Sir. Sir, it happened'", he said. The mother stated that, until that moment, she had not received any official communication from the Ukrainian Army. Body remains in the combat area According to information received by the family, Mateus' body still needed to be removed from the area where the confrontation occurred. Diana stated that her battle companions would have to travel around 30 kilometers carrying the body to a point where a battalion vehicle could pick it up and take it to the military base. Only after arriving at the base would it be possible to officially confirm the death and begin the procedures for issuing the death certificate. "My hands are tied. I'm counting only on the solidarity of his friends and battle companions so that they can rescue my son's body", he declared. The mother also stated that she believed that Ukrainian forces were taking time to confirm the death because the body had not yet been recovered.
