According to the State Secretariat for Public Security (SSP), the case took place in the Estiva neighborhood. The Secretariat reported that the GCM was off duty and claimed that he had been threatened by a man who had a knife. The SSP also reported that the municipal guard's knife and gun were seized for forensic examination and that the case was registered at the Taubaté Sectional Police Station as homicide, threat and self-defense. In a statement, the City of Taubaté said that the guard "was in an establishment when he was approached by a man, who, during a disagreement, advanced carrying a knife. Given the situation, the guard verbalized orders to cease the attempted aggression, but, as the act continued, he fired two firearms shots, in self-defense." City Hall also said that, after reports from witnesses and footage of the establishment, the guard was released.
