Inspection highlights precarious food at hospital in Petrópolis Disclosure The food offered to patients at the Alcides Carneiro Municipal Hospital, in Petrópolis, in the Serrana region of Rio, was the subject of a complaint following an inspection carried out by councilor Léo França (PT). The parliamentarian classified the situation as "serious and inhumane" and referred the case to the supervisory bodies. According to the councilor, the inspection was carried out on Sunday (5), after receiving complaints from patients and family members about the quality of the meals served in the unit. According to Léo França, patients reported that, for around 15 days, eggs have been the only source of protein offered at meals. During the inspection, the councilor recorded the existence of dozens of boxes of eggs stored in the hospital. ? Follow the g1 Região Serrana channel on WhatsApp.

In the area designated for storing fruit and vegetables, the parliamentarian also stated that he found deteriorated fruits and vegetables stored along with food still fit for consumption. According to him, the unit also faces a lack of supplies needed to prepare meals for hospitalized patients. Another point questioned by the councilor is the possibility of outsourcing the hospital food service. According to him, the measure raises concern because the Alcides Carneiro Hospital and the Posse Pre-Hospital Unit, served by the same structure, already have functioning kitchens, equipment and public servants dedicated to the service. "A private company will take over a public structure that already exists, that already works and that was built with the population's money. Who benefits from this outsourcing? Who is benefiting? The City Hall needs to explain this decision and, first of all, immediately resolve the patient's food situation", stated the councilor. According to Léo França, the complaint was forwarded to the Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the Federal Public Ministry, the Ministry of Health and the State Public Defender's Office. What the city hall says In a statement, the Petrópolis City Council informed that there has been no decision taken on the outsourcing of hospital food services. Regarding complaints related to food, the Municipal Health Department stated that it is natural for some fruit and vegetable products to deteriorate due to transport or the ripening process. According to the ministry, these foods are discarded and are not used in the meals served to patients. The secretariat also informed that the menu at Hospital Alcides Carneiro is prepared by nutritionists and follows technical criteria to guarantee adequate nutrition for hospitalized patients. MORE
