Fire at hotel in Chapecó leaves 5 injured The 61-year-old man suspected of setting fire to a hotel in Chapecó, in the west of Santa Catarina, was arrested this Monday (6). He was staying there and started the fire in the early hours of the morning because he believed he was being chased, according to the Civil Police. The case is investigated. In total, nine people were rescued and three of them were taken to hospital after inhaling the smoke that spread and compromised the escape route. He was quite upset. This will be better clarified in the police investigation", said delegate Rodrigo Moura. The flames started around 12:30 am, in the city center. According to the Fire Department, the fire started in an apartment on the second floor and the smoke spread through the common areas of the building. The Military Police were called and took the man to the Police Duty Center, where he was detained. Furthermore, the case delegate requested preventive detention, which should be analyzed this Monday. The Civil Police are awaiting expertise and will hear witnesses and victims in the case. Fire at hotel leaves people injured When firefighters arrived at the hotel, they realized that some victims were unable to leave the place and so they began fighting the fire and searching for guests. At the time of the incident, there were 24 guests on site. After extinguishing the flames, the crews carried out the aftermath, ventilating the building and monitoring the environment. The teams also helped support guests in removing personal belongings.
