Fire stingray and blue peacock bass swimming in Babaçulândia A fire stingray caught the attention of internet users after being filmed in the crystal clear water of the Tocantins River. The video was recorded in Babaçulândia, northern region of Tocantins, and shows the animal swimming calmly through the vegetation in the company of peacock bass. (see video above). ? He found the species swimming in the shallows of the river while trying to fish with a friend. "I'm passionate about sport fishing, I'm passionate about it. This fishing was supposed to be a visual style, in a shallower area, with clean water, with two to three meters of 'depth'. We raised the drone to see if we could find fish and we came across a fire ray, a very large species", he reports. Wanderson Costa was once a fishing guide and currently works in a fishing store. He explains that the curious movement of fish, following the animal's rhythm, generally indicates the search for food, being considered a method called commensalism - a harmonious ecological relationship between different species. Fire stingray is spotted in crystal clear waters in TO Divulgação/Wanderson Costa "It's a way for peacock bass to protect themselves and, as there is algae at the bottom [of the river], the ray is moving and releasing small shrimp and forage fish, which are the peacock bass' prey. But it's not common to see the two together. There were around 13 specimens of the fish together", he says. Caio Leal, who accompanied his friend Wanderson, says that the record was reason enough for them to decide not to enter the water, as it could end up scaring the animals. "A moment like that was on another level. For us, seeing the animal in that natural condition, in its natural habitat, without our interference, was beyond what sport fishing provides. Seeing that school of blue peacock bass and a gigantic stingray here in Tocantins was a feeling from another world", says Caio.
