Family gets stuck in the Cristo Salvador elevator in Sertãozinho Retired Gentil Ferreira da Silva, aged 65, describes the moments of tension he experienced with a group when he was trapped for around 30 minutes in the elevator of the Cristo Salvador monument, in Sertãozinho (SP). "I believed that we were going to fall due to the blow that it took. But, thank God, the elevator didn't fall and we were fine", he says. Mother and son were visiting Sertãozinho and the group arranged a tour of Christ, which is a tourist attraction. The monument is located in a park and is 57 meters high. According to the retiree, there was a sign stating that the elevator would stop on the third floor due to maintenance, but the equipment went up to the sixth floor and stopped after a strong impact. "We pressed all the buttons, nothing worked. Luckily the phone didn't go offline. We had a signal and were able to call." Gentil's daughter, Giovana Lucas de Souza Prats, says she received a call from her mother asking for help. She called the police and went to Cristo with her husband. According to Giovana, the biggest concern was her daughter, who was in the elevator with her grandparents. "I was quite distressed, not knowing when this would be resolved. We always carry my daughter's bag, which has water and a bottle, but that day my mother hadn't taken one", she says. The municipal secretary of Culture and Tourism, José Adilson dos Santos, says that the City Hall has a contract with a company from Ribeirão Preto (SP) for monthly maintenance of the elevator. According to him, this was the second problem of this type recorded in the equipment this year. The company was contacted, made technical adjustments and the elevator started working again. Regarding the failure in the emergency activation system, José Adilson states that the company is notified whenever there are problems in the elevator. The secretary suspects that the button failure may have occurred due to the impact, but did not detail the technical cause of the failure.
