MPPA carries out inspection on Avenida Liberdade after section gives way in Greater Belém. MPPA The Public Ministry of the State of Pará (MPPA) carried out, this Tuesday (7), a technical inspection on Avenida Liberdade, in Greater Belém. The action aimed to monitor the road recovery works and reinforce environmental monitoring in the Environmental Protection Area (APA). A section of around 150 meters of the avenue collapsed on June 28th. During the inspection, it was found that soil reinforcement services had been carried out and a temporary diversion had been implemented. The measure should allow the use of the road during the July period. The technicians carried out a drone overflight in the areas close to the avenue to identify possible points of vegetation suppression and areas at risk of environmental damage. Fauna crossings and the existence of water resources around the highway were also analyzed. ? The inspection was carried out by a team from the MPPA's Interdisciplinary Technical Support Group (Gati). Asphalt on Avenida Liberdade gives way and road is closed for repairs Avenida Liberdade is the first expressway in Belém and received an investment of R$410 million. The initial delivery forecast was October 2025, before the UN Climate Conference (COP 30), but the work was only completed on April 2, 2026. Environmental monitoring The MPPA also follows an administrative procedure aimed at preventing irregular occupations and environmental crimes in the area where Avenida Liberdade is located. The region is part of the Belém Metropolitan Region Environmental Protection Area (APA Belém), created in 1993 to protect important supply sources, such as the Bolonha and Água Preta lakes. The site has already been the target of invasion and plant suppression attempts, which led to intensified monitoring. According to prosecutor Marco Aurélio Lima, the inspection is part of a set of actions aimed at environmental preservation and the recovery of degraded areas. "That entire region is a protected area, and the Public Prosecutor's Office is monitoring it to prevent any illegal occupation. If new invasions occur, we have already requested the support of the Military and Civil Police to adopt the appropriate measures", he stated. First expressway in Belém The road was delivered with the aim of improving urban mobility in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, offering a new alternative access to the capital. Avenida Liberdade connects to Alça Viária, a road complex of approximately 74 kilometers that connects the Metropolitan Region of Belém to the interior of the state. Despite promises of progress, the construction of Avenida Liberdade was the target of strong criticism from residents and environmentalists, who denounced socio-environmental damage. Riverine families who depend on fishing and extractivism reported the destruction of their livelihoods. Avenue layout.
