ATO's Artistic Immersion Program is open for registration for a residency in Alcântara, in MA Disclosure/Advisory Registration for the fourth edition of the ATO's Artistic Immersion Program is open until July 17th. With the theme “Planning for Failure”, the residency will be held between August 22nd and September 6th, 2026, in Alcântara, Maranhão. The program offers an incentive grant of R$ 1,500, round-trip tickets to São Luís, transfers between São Luís and Alcântara, accommodation and food throughout the residency period. With an itinerant nature, the Artistic Immersion Program takes place every year in different territories in Brazil. The initiative is always carried out in dialogue with collectives, independent spaces and cultural projects that operate based on local realities.

The proposal understands the territory not only as a setting, but as an active part of the creation processes. The objective is to bring artists from different languages ??closer to the knowledge, landscapes and ways of life of the communities that receive each edition. This year, the residency focuses on the concept of “Planning for Failure”. The reflection starts from the history of Alcântara itself, a city marked by the ruins of the old colonial and slave project. At the same time, the territory reveals other forms of permanence, built by quilombola communities, traditional knowledge and relationships with the land, the sea, memory and ancestry. According to Rafael RG, coordinator of the immersion program, the proposal is to build experiences based on encounters with the territory. “More than arriving at a place to produce a work, we want to create a time of coexistence, listening and experimentation, in which the territory also transforms those who participate in the residency”, he states. The residency will be carried out in partnership with Casa do Sereio, an independent initiative based in Alcântara and dedicated to research, experimentation and the exchange of knowledge in the areas of arts and culture. For Yuri Logrado, coordinator of Casa do Sereio, receiving a residency in the territory expands the dialogue between artists, the community and different world views. “Receiving a program like this here strengthens exchanges and creates other forms of relationships with the city, with people and with the processes that emerge from the territory”, he states. During the immersion, participants will develop their creative processes through walks through the city's ruins, meetings with local communities, exchanges with master ceramists from Quilombo de Itamatatiua, visits to the Quilombola Museum of Itamatatiua and collective experimentation activities. Alcântara Alcântara is located on the continental margin of São Marcos Bay, in front of the island of São Luís. The municipality brings together landscapes, memories and ways of life linked to different periods of history. Before Portuguese colonization, the territory was known as Tapuitapera and was home to several indigenous peoples. Afterwards, it became an important economic center linked to the colonial cycle and slave labor. This process left as a legacy an architectural complex that is today recognized as national heritage. Currently, Alcântara is a living territory, marked by the presence of quilombola communities, ancestral knowledge, cultural manifestations and collective relationships with the land, waters and memory. Casa do Sereio Founded in 2018, Casa do Sereio is an independent initiative based in Alcântara. The space is dedicated to research, experimentation and the exchange of knowledge in the areas of arts and culture. In dialogue with the historical and cultural layers of the territory, Casa do Sereio develops actions that bring together contemporary artistic practices, local knowledge and immersion experiences. The initiative promotes coexistence and shared creation processes between artists, researchers and cultural agents in direct relationship with the territory.
