"Jenifer" was born from a romance on Tinder and almost ended up in Gusttavo Lima's drawer. The idea for one of the biggest hits of 2019 emerged timidly in mid-2018. At the time, the country singer invested in post-makeout love vows and romantic bachata. And to avoid this, one of the composers was a little hesitant to talk to his friends about his desire to tell the story of a guy who comes around after dumping his ex and meeting a woman on a dating app. This article is part of the series "20 hits in 20 years", which is on GloboPop, Globo's new vertical short video application, available for free on your cell phone. On the app, you can follow the "20 hits in 20 years" stage so you don't miss any episode. Download GloboPop here! A success in the voice of Gabriel Diniz, the song was written by eight hands. The group of songwriters, who called themselves Big Jhows, used to get together to create some tracks. And on one of those days of meeting, a woman appeared hugging one of them. In a joking mood, his friends asked if he had a new girlfriend, and he explained that he met her on a dating app. Mariana Xavier and Gabriel Diniz behind the scenes of the hit "Jenifer" (Photo: Disclosure) The meeting remained in the mind of one of the composers. But hesitation with the romantic country scene at the time delayed the production of the hit a little. After the idea was accepted and shared, everything fell into place. With the lyrics ready, they sent the demo version to several managers and artists. The first to return was Gusttavo Lima, who paid for the exclusivity of the song, but did not release it. He invested in the track, even sang at a festival, but gave up on it. The song could have stayed in Gusttavo's drawer. But Gabriel Diniz knew the track, talked to the "ambassador" and said he would keep the song if he were really going to give up. Gusttavo, who was on the country team dedicated to investing in romanticism, abandoned Jenifer for good. Gabriel Diniz took a gamble, recorded a music video with actress Mariana Xavier and came out strong with the song in 2019. But the artist wasn't able to take much advantage of the wave of his big hit. Months after its release, the singer died in a plane crash in May of that year.
