The Federal Supreme Court (STF) scheduled the judgment of the process that deals with the holding of new elections for the buffer mandate of governor of Rio de Janeiro for August 19th.

In April, the trial was suspended following a request from Minister Flávio Dino.

The case deals with the action in which the PSD state directory defends the holding of direct (popular) elections for the interim command of the state, and not indirect voting, through the state deputies of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), as defined by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

On March 23, one day after resigning from office, former governor Cláudio Castro was condemned to ineligibility by the TSE.

As former vice-governor Thiago Pampolha left office, in 2025, to take up a vacancy in the state's Court of Auditors, and the former president of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) Rodrigo Bacellar had been impeached, the court ordered indirect elections to be held for a buffer mandate, until the end of 2026.

However, the PSD appealed to the Supreme Court and defended direct elections. Castro's resignation was seen by the party as a maneuver to force indirect elections, rather than direct ones, as the former governor could leave office by April 4th.

Currently, the president of the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro (TJRJ), Ricardo Couto de Castro, temporarily holds the position of governor of the state.
