(FOLHAPRESS) - The STF (Supreme Federal Court) stated this Thursday (16) that it will continue to act "independently and firmly" and without giving in to influences or pressures of an external nature, after decisions by the Brazilian Court led to the new 25% tariff on Brazilian products imposed by the Donald Trump government.

In a statement, the president of the Supreme Court, Minister Edson Fachin, said that the court respects the autonomy of the institutions of all nations and "expects equal respect".

"Disagreements between States must be conducted through diplomatic channels and the mechanisms specific to International Law, never through initiatives that could be interpreted as a form of constraint on the exercise of constitutional jurisdiction," he wrote.

As Folha de S.Paulo showed, among the reasons that led the US to impose tariffs on Brazil are the fact that Brazilian courts issued confidential orders ordering American technology companies to remove certain political content.

Furthermore, the American government says that companies now face high daily fines if they fail to comply with these decisions and, in certain circumstances, may even be forced to interrupt their operations in Brazil.

Rubio says Brazil was taxed 25% because Lula did not negotiate with the US in good faith

The new 25% tariff on Brazilian products was announced on Wednesday night (15) and should be implemented on July 22nd. The surcharge will be applied under Section 301, a trade law that authorizes the U.S. to retaliate against countries whose policies or practices are considered unfair.
