A survey by Serasa showed that almost half of Brazilian drivers do not know how to settle their tax arrears and that many have already failed to pay the tax in previous years.
Installment payments can be an alternative for those who are unable to pay the full amount at once and want to avoid problems, such as fines, registration in active debt and impediments to the annual licensing of the vehicle.
In most states, negotiations can be done directly through the Treasury Department channels or through accredited companies. There is also the possibility of paying in installments by credit card, although this method may increase the final cost of the debt due to the interest charged by operators.
To check the debts, simply enter the vehicle's license plate number and Renavam number on the official Sefaz portals or on authorized platforms. The system informs the amount due, the installment options and the charges applied.
If the debt is already registered as an active debt, the procedure is usually different. In these cases, the owner must contact the State Attorney General's Office responsible for the charge.
Conditions vary according to the federation unit. In São Paulo, for example, installments can be made in up to five installments through Sefaz, in addition to the options offered by accredited companies. Minas Gerais allows payment in up to 12 installments. States like Alagoas also offer installments in up to 12 installments, while in Rio Grande do Sul there is the possibility of negotiating active debt in up to five installments.
Before closing the agreement, the recommendation is to check the state's specific rules, compare the available options and check the total amount that will be paid with interest and fees.
To avoid further delays, experts advise that drivers follow the annual IPVA calendar, create a financial reserve throughout the year and use reminders to avoid missing payment deadlines.
