From salads to fitness dishes: healthy food is advancing in the outskirts of SP What started as a small stall in the South Zone of São Paulo has turned into a restaurant known for combining healthy food, affordable prices and social impact in the outskirts. In Campo Limpo, the most populous neighborhood in the capital of São Paulo, mother and son run a business that has hosted renowned chefs and become a reference for community gastronomy. The idea was born at home. Thiago Vinícius decided to transform the natural seasonings prepared by his mother, known as Tia Nice, into a venture aimed at democratizing healthy eating. "I decided to democratize my mother's seasoning, which was just mine, at home. Now, it belongs to everyone in Campo Limpo, in Brazil and the world", says the entrepreneur. Restaurant on the outskirts of SP makes R$40,000 with healthy food Reproduction/PEGN Tia Nice grew up surrounded by cooking and developed a cuisine based on fresh and natural ingredients. She avoids industrialized seasonings and uses herbs and vegetables grown in her own garden. “I always wanted to cook without artificial seasonings,” he says. Before starting her own business, she worked in vegetarian restaurants in upscale neighborhoods of São Paulo and even had a snack bar on the coast. But it was close to home, with the support of his son, that he managed to turn the experience into his own business. The restaurant started small, with just two tables. Today, it accommodates up to 50 people and serves customers in the lounge, delivery and orders for events. The initial investment was R$80 thousand, and the business achieved monthly revenue of R$40 thousand, with an average ticket of R$19.90. Among the highlights of the menu is the vegetarian feijoada, prepared with organic ingredients supplied by small producers in the region. On Saturdays, the dish sells around 150 units. According to Thiago, starting a business in the periphery still involves structural challenges, such as difficulty accessing credit and lack of basic infrastructure. “We are constantly deconstructing the idea that the favela is a place of violence,” he says. The success of the business went beyond the limits of the neighborhood and caught the attention of well-known names in Brazilian gastronomy. Chefs such as Rodrigo Oliveira, Bela Gil and Alex Atala have already visited the restaurant to try the house's dishes. For the future, the duo wants to expand the impact of the business within the community. “May we be a vector of inspiration for other neighborhoods”, says Thiago.
