Senator Jader Barbalho (MDB/PA) presented an urgent request this week to speed up the processing of a bill that reduces the area of ??the Jamanxim National Forest (PA). If approved, the project can be voted directly in the Senate plenary, without consideration by the House's thematic committees.

As pointed out by ((o)) eco, the project was approved by the Chamber of Deputies in May, during the infamous “Agro Week”, along with other proposals that dismantle supervision and environmental protection. The justification would be to regularize the occupation of areas within FLONA, created in 2006, and guarantee legal security for properties located in the region.

However, environmentalists point out the obvious: reducing the area of the Jamanxim FLONA will encourage deforestation in one of the regions of the Amazon most under pressure from environmental destruction. The proposal could also encourage new illegal occupations, favoring land grabbing in the territory.

Jamanxim's FLONA is not the only one threatened by the anti-environmental offensive in the National Congress. Of the bills accelerated in May, five attempt to reverse or reduce Conservation Units and Indigenous Lands. Among the threatened territories are the Baleia Franca Environmental Protection Area and the Toldo Imbu and Morro dos Cavalos TIs, all in SC; TI Tekoha Guasu Guavirá (PR); and FLONA in Cristópolis (BA).
