After the storms, the South must face intense cold and frost with the advance of polar air masses

After the storms that hit part of the South Region this Thursday (2), a new mass of polar air advances across the country and completely changes the meteorological scenario. The rain loses strength from Friday (3), but gives way to intense cold, with temperatures close to 0°C, risk of widespread frost and even the possibility of snow in the highest areas of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.

According to Canal Rural meteorologist Arthur Müller, the warning for storms remains throughout this Thursday, mainly in the north of Rio Grande do Sul, west of Santa Catarina and south of Paraná, where there is still a risk of hail, strong winds and intense rain.

"Today we are still on red alert due to the storms. From tomorrow onwards the rain will decrease and, at the weekend, the temperature will plummet across the entire South Region", he states.

Intense cold arrives after the passage of the cold front

With the advance of the polar air mass, temperatures drop rapidly between Friday and Saturday.

Friday's dawn should already register marks close to 0°C in much of the center-south of Rio Grande do Sul. Despite the cold, the formation of frost tends to be limited by the presence of clouds and humidity left by the cold front.

On the other hand, this combination increases the possibility of winter precipitation.

“As we will still have rain during the morning and temperatures close to zero degrees, there is a possibility of snow in some areas”, explains Müller.

On Saturday, with more open weather, the risk of frost increases significantly and is expected to affect practically all of Rio Grande do Sul, also reaching Santa Catarina.

Paraná will also see a drop in temperatures, but, according to the meteorologist, the cold is less intense compared to neighboring states and there is no forecast of frost.

In addition to the cold, the formation of an extratropical cyclone in the high seas leaves the sea rough between the coast of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. The conditions make navigation difficult and increase the risk of hangovers along the southern Brazilian coast.

After the cold front passes, the rain should take a break. According to Arthur Müller, the forecast indicates around ten consecutive days of firm weather in the South Region, a condition that should favor the recovery of areas affected by the storms recorded this week.

Heat and dry air advance across Central Brazil

While the South faces a new wave of cold, the rest of the country is heading in the opposite direction.

According to the meteorologist, temperatures continue to rise in the Center-West, Matopiba and much of the interior of Brazil. In the coming days, maximum temperatures may exceed 36°C and even 37°C, accompanied by low levels of relative humidity.

This scenario increases the potential for fire outbreaks, a trend that is expected to intensify throughout July.

"The area with the greatest risk of fires will advance from Matopiba to the Central-West and, later, to the Southeast. The tendency is for this scenario to only worsen until the rains return, in October", he warns.
