Before falling ill, the “Jurassic Park” star had faced lymphoma and achieved remission after undergoing CAR-T therapy, an immunotherapy treatment that uses the patient's own cells to fight cancer.
“Before he became ill, Sam courageously fought and beat lymphoma through a new treatment called CAR-T therapy,” the rep said.
Neill had been diagnosed in 2022 with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of blood cancer. Later, he said he was in remission, although he believed he would need to continue undergoing chemotherapy indefinitely.
According to the representative, even during treatment, the actor remained professionally active. In the last year, he participated in the filming of four projects and continued to follow the production of his winery, Two Paddocks.
The family will hold a private funeral ceremony at the actor's property in New Zealand. The date has not yet been announced.
In the statement, the representative also thanked those close to him for respecting the privacy of the artist and his family.
“I would like to thank those who were truly close to Sam for respecting his privacy, providing the care he deserved and his loved ones need at this very difficult time,” he said.
The family also asked that, instead of flowers, fans donate to institutions supported by the actor, such as the Dunstan Hospital Foundation, the Snowdome Foundation, the New Zealand Nature Fund and Sustainable Tarras.
